These pictures were taken during the trip from San Jose, CA to the Phoenix AZ Bug-o-Rama and back. On this cruise were Steve Hollingsworth and Nelson Brum in Steve's '69 Beetle, Phil Carr and Jim Kikuchi in Jim's '64 Ghia, Daniel, Kathren, Daniel Jr., and Catie Inocencio in (believe it or not) Dan's 67 Ghia.
The two '67s and the Beetle left Steve's shop at 4:00 AM Friday morning. Jim was still working on the '64 and he and Phil took off about an hour later.
On the way, we dropped by the Berg's shop. That and an extra gas stop allowed Jim and Phil to catch up and the '64 joined up at Grandma's restaurant.
Most of the way, I was watching the oil temp. Readings over 220° had us slowing down most of the way. Don't get too excited about that speedo shot. I still have the 145/15s on the front of the '67, making it read high. Steve said we were doing 80 at the time.
When we reached Phoenix, we put in at Don Bulitta's place, then there was a big dinner at a local Mexican restaurant.
Saturday, day of the show. We woke up and washed the cars (took a few pictures) and headed out to the show. That is "Shotsie" (spelling?) curled up on Nelson's legs.
Steve got us into the Berg Cruisers parking area - right on the grass by the pavilion. Way Cool!
After the car show there was a private BBQ under the canopy. The Bergs were there, as was Dave Cormack, Rick Mortensen, John Connolly and family and many others.
It got really cold after the sun went down and the wind came up. John Connolly Sr. kindly loaned me a coat since I foolishly left mine back at the Bulitta's along with my jeans. Thanks, John!
After the BBQ Jim, Phil, Nelson and myself went over to Frenchy Dehoux's place. Impressive collection of stuff Frenchy's got! Dig that letter from Big Daddy Don Garlits!
Sunday we kicked back at the Bulitta's. Looked over the cars, adjusted the valves, tossed the frizbie, chewed the fat and generally relaxed. Lots of people showed up throughout the day.
Monday: time to head West. I keep myself entertained with the digital camera.
